Up for sale is an Original US WWII Purple Heart Grouping to : Joh P Red. He was inducted into the USAAF on June 10,1942, at Ft Des Moines,IA and received basic training at St Louis,MO. He attended Radio School at Sioux Falls,SD and Gunnery School at Harlingen,TX. He was a ground radio and flight radio instructor and received crew training on B­24s at Davis Mothan AFB, Tucson,AZ, Sioux City,IA and other bases. His crew was assigned to a B­17 was at Kearney,NE. His crew flew out of New York City via Rio de Janeiro,South America, the Azores to North Africa. Red served with the 15th AF,97th BG,341st BS at Amendola,Italy. He was shot down on his eighth mission over Vienna,Austria on July 16,1944 and was taken to a POW camp, Stalag Luft IV, in the town of Grosstychow, Pomerania,Northern Germany, now a part of Poland. He marched on the Death March ahead of the Russian advance from February 1945 to May 1945, across Germany to Fallingbostel 117 near Bremen,Germany. They were liberated by a Canadian light infantry regiment attached to the British 7th Armed Div. in May 1945. His awards and medals for serving in air combat during WWII and the Korean Conflict include the Purple Heart, American Service Medal,WWII Victory Medal,EAME Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars for participating in the Rome/Arno combat and Central Europe Campaign, Air Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, and the Berlin Airlift Device.
